## Why Teams Move from Trello to monday.com

Trello is quick to start with. Teams usually look at monday.com when one board per project stops being enough: when they need the same work seen as a table, a timeline and a dashboard, or reports across many boards.

Our [Trello vs monday.com comparison](https://www.taskrhino.ca/project-management-software/trello-vs-monday/) compares the two in more detail.

## What Moves, What We Rebuild, What Cannot Move

Data moves through Trello's exports and API; customizations such as automations, views and forms are rebuilt in monday.com.

## How the Migration Runs

Every step is agreed with you before the next one starts.

### Free assessment

We look at your Trello boards, item counts, files and automations, and send a fixed quote with the list of what moves, what we rebuild and what cannot move.

### Data map

Each part of Trello becomes a monday.com board, group, item or column of the right type. You sign off the map, including what to leave behind.

### Test migration

We move a sample with its comments and files, and you check it in monday.com.

### Full migration and rebuild

We move everything in scope, link the items, and rebuild your automations, views and forms in monday.com.

### Checks and handover

We compare item counts board by board, walk your team through the new boards, and hand the export files over to you.

## When Trello Is Still the Right Call

Moving is not always the answer. Stay on Trello, or plan the move carefully, if:

- Your team uses one or two simple boards and is happy with them. A migration is worth it when you need what Trello does not do.
- You have a few small boards with no comments or files you need to keep. monday.com's Trello import or a spreadsheet import is enough.

### Doing it yourself, compared

The options monday.com gives you, set against a full migration. Each fact comes from the sources below.

| | monday.com's Trello import | Spreadsheet import (CSV or Excel) | TaskRhino migration |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Card fields | Task name, labels and dates | The columns in your file (CSV export needs Trello Premium) | Every field, including custom fields and descriptions |
| Checklists, comments and files | Not supported | Not imported | Checklists as subitems, comments as updates, files in a Files column |
| Size | Up to 10K rows at a time | Up to 8,000 rows into a new board | Planned per board before the move |
| Automations and Power-Ups | Not moved | Not moved | Rebuilt in monday.com |

The assessment tells you which of these apply before you commit.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I move Trello to monday.com myself?

You can. monday.com's built-in Trello import brings in card names, labels and dates, up to 10K rows at a time. Descriptions, checklists, activities and files are not supported, so teams that need those use a full migration.

### Do comments and attachments move?

Trello's board JSON export holds a board's 1,000 most recent actions, and a Workspace export (Trello Premium) holds every comment and can include the raw attachment files. We copy comments into the item's updates and files into a Files column.

### What happens to our automations, views and forms?

No export carries them. We list each one in the assessment and rebuild the ones you still need as monday.com automations, views, forms and dashboards.

### What cannot be moved?

Inbox cards: Trello can't export Inbox cards. Move them to a board before the migration. Change history (who changed what, and when): An import can't write monday.com's activity log; it starts on the day of the move. Everything else in the table above either moves or is rebuilt in monday.com.

### How long does it take?

It depends on how many boards and items you have, how many files, and how much needs rebuilding. The dates are fixed in your quote after the free assessment.

### How much does it cost?

It depends on your boards, item counts, files and automations. The assessment is free and ends with a fixed quote.
