Canonical: https://www.taskrhino.ca/en-us/data-migration/excel-to-monday/

> Move Excel workbooks and Google Sheets to monday.com: tabs, rows, columns, subitems, dates and people. What moves, what we rebuild, what cannot.

We turn your Excel workbooks and Google Sheets into monday.com boards: every tab, with the right column types, people, dates and subitems, and we rebuild your formulas, charts and pivot tables as columns and dashboards.

## Why Teams Move from Excel to monday.com

Spreadsheets are where most work starts. Teams usually look at monday.com when several people edit the same sheet, nobody knows which version is current, and status updates happen by email.

Our [guide to what monday.com is](https://www.taskrhino.ca/en-us/monday-com/what-is-monday-com/) explains how boards, columns and automations replace a shared spreadsheet.

## What Moves, What We Rebuild, What Cannot Move

Data comes from your workbooks and sheets; customizations such as automations, views and forms are rebuilt in monday.com.

## How the Migration Runs

Every step is agreed with you before the next one starts.

### Free assessment

We look at your Excel spreadsheets, item counts, files and automations, and send a fixed quote with the list of what moves, what we rebuild and what cannot move.

### Data map

Each part of Excel becomes a monday.com board, group, item or column of the right type. You sign off the map, including what to leave behind.

### Test migration

We move a sample with its comments and files, and you check it in monday.com.

### Full migration and rebuild

We move everything in scope, link the items, and rebuild your automations, views and forms in monday.com.

### Checks and handover

We compare item counts board by board, walk your team through the new boards, and hand the export files over to you.

## When Excel Is Still the Right Call

Moving is not always the answer. Stay on Excel, or plan the move carefully, if:

- The spreadsheet is a one-person model or a financial calculation. monday.com is for shared work; a model that only you edit can stay in Excel.
- You have a few small spreadsheets with no comments or files you need to keep. monday.com's Excel and Google Sheets import or a spreadsheet import is enough.

### Doing it yourself, compared

The options monday.com gives you, set against a full migration. Each fact comes from the sources below.

| | monday.com's Excel and Google Sheets import | TaskRhino migration |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Tabs | Excel: first tab only. Google Sheets: one tab at a time | Every tab, as its own board |
| Size | Excel: 8,000 rows and 50 columns into a new board. Google Sheets: 3,000 rows and 20 columns | Planned per board before the move |
| Column types | Number, Status, Email, Date or Text into a new board | Every monday.com column type that fits |
| Subitems and formulas | Subitems arrive as items; formulas are not rebuilt | Subitems under their parent; formulas rebuilt |

The assessment tells you which of these apply before you commit.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I move Excel to monday.com myself?

Yes, for a simple sheet. monday.com imports an Excel or CSV file of up to 8,000 rows into a new board (first tab only), and Google Sheets of up to 3,000 rows and 20 columns. Workbooks with many tabs, subitems or formulas take more work.

### Do comments and attachments move?

Spreadsheets rarely hold comments or files that matter. If yours do, cell notes can go into the item's updates and linked files into a Files column.

### What happens to our automations, views and forms?

No export carries them. We list each one in the assessment and rebuild the ones you still need as monday.com automations, views, forms and dashboards.

### What cannot be moved?

Version history: An import can't write monday.com's activity log; it starts on the day of the move. Everything else in the table above either moves or is rebuilt in monday.com.

### How long does it take?

It depends on how many spreadsheets and items you have, how many files, and how much needs rebuilding. The dates are fixed in your quote after the free assessment.

### How much does it cost?

It depends on your spreadsheets, item counts, files and automations. The assessment is free and ends with a fixed quote.
