monday.com Column Copying Between Boards

A small wooden rhino carries one column of glowing tiles from one small tile board to the matching empty slot on another.

Move data between boards. Not items. Just column values.

Can you copy columns between boards in monday.com? monday.com has dozens of ways to duplicate items, connect items, and mirror data across boards. But if you need to copy specific column values from one board to another — like taking CRM deal details and writing them to a newly created project board — there’s no ready-made tool for it: cross-board automations map only the columns you choose onto a new item, and the workflow builder can write chosen values into an existing item on another board, but each takes setup per board.

You can duplicate the entire item (creating a second copy you don’t need). You can use Connect Boards + Mirror (which only works if items are linked). You can build custom automations with third-party tools like Make or Zapier. Or you can copy-paste manually.

This guide compares the native options: cross-board automations, workflow Update item steps and column templates, and when each one fits.

Deal details need to reach the project board, but duplication creates unwanted duplicate items.

monday.com’s duplication tools copy the entire item or board, not just specific columns. (monday.com Help Center) Cross-board create-item automations do let you map only chosen columns, and workflows can update specific columns of an existing item on another board (monday.com Help Center).

monday.com integration approach: Use Connect Boards + Mirror columns to display data from one board on another. Problem: this only works if items are related via Connect Boards. If you want to copy data from a CRM board to a project board that’s unrelated structurally, it doesn’t work.

Automation workaround: “When deal moves to Won, create item on Project board with these fields…”

This works, but requires:

  • Custom automation rules per board type
  • Field-by-field mapping in automation logic (see our guide on data transfer between boards)
  • Dealing with type conversions (dates, dropdowns, text fields)
  • Manual cleanup if the schema changes

Third-party middleware: Make, Zapier, or custom scripts can copy column values between boards. But you’re paying for another subscription and maintaining API connections. This is part of the broader monday.com cross-board automation limitations that teams run into at scale. Our monday.com automations guide covers what the native recipes can do.

  1. Prepare the target board: add the columns you want to fill (Event Name, Client Name, Budget, Start Date, Event Type), using the same column types as the source.
  2. Set the trigger: on the CRM board, start a cross-board automation such as “When status changes to Won”.
  3. Create the item: choose “create an item in board” and pick the Event Overview board.
  4. Map the columns: map each source column to its target; Dependency, Link to Item and Time Tracking columns can’t be mapped.
  5. Test: move a test deal to Won and check every value on the new item.

More on this pattern in auto-creating items on another board.

When the target item already exists, the workflow builder’s Find matching item step locates it by a column value (a deal ID, for example), and an Update item step writes the chosen values. No new item is created.

Column templates copy a column’s setup, not its values: customize a column (for example, status labels and colors), then save it as a template and add it to other boards from the Column Center. A template can’t be edited after saving, and column permissions don’t carry over.

A create-item automation leaves the CRM deal unchanged and creates one new item with the mapped values. If you later update the CRM deal, the project values don’t change; for ongoing sync, connect the items and use Mirror columns.

A project management company wins deals through a CRM. Each deal needs a project created with the deal details pre-populated.

By hand:

  1. Sales rep wins deal on CRM
  2. PM opens CRM, copies deal name, client name, budget, start date
  3. PM opens monday.com, navigates to project templates
  4. PM manually creates a project folder and duplicates boards
  5. PM opens Event Overview board
  6. PM pastes deal name into title column
  7. PM pastes client name
  8. PM manually converts budget format (CRM uses currency, project board uses number)
  9. PM manually enters start date

With a cross-board automation:

  1. Sales rep moves deal to “Won” on CRM
  2. The automation creates an item on the Event Overview board with the mapped columns
  3. PM opens the board → the deal details are already there

The automation targets one fixed board, so if each project gets its own duplicated boards, repoint the recipe for each project (see cross-board recipes that break on duplication).

6 questions

How can I automatically transfer values from a specific column on one monday.com board to a matching column on another board without duplicating items?

monday.com has no one-click column copy, but cross-board automations can map chosen columns onto a new item on another board (each column must exist on both boards), and the workflow builder can write chosen values into an existing item on another board without duplicating it.

What’s the best way to copy a status column with custom labels and colors to another existing monday.com board without recreating it manually?

On Enterprise, save the status column as a column template: its label text and colors are saved, and you can add it to any board from the Column Center. A template can’t be edited after saving, and adding it doesn’t change columns already on other boards. On other plans, recreate the labels by hand or duplicate a board that already has the column.

Can monday.com automations copy column data from board A to board B when new items are added, without using Connect Boards columns?

Yes: a cross-board automation such as “When an item is created, create an item in board B” maps the columns you choose, as long as each column exists on both boards. To write into an item that already exists on board B, use the workflow builder’s Find matching item and Update item steps.

How do I sync dropdown column options across multiple monday.com boards without Enterprise column templates?

Without column templates (Enterprise only), recreate the dropdown labels on each board, or duplicate a board that already has the column. Connect Boards columns link items but don’t copy column structures.

Is there a way to mirror or copy just the values of a people or date column between unrelated monday.com boards?

A cross-board automation can map people and date columns onto a new item when the same column exists on both boards, and the workflow builder can find a matching item by column value and update its people or date columns. Values copied this way don’t update later; for live values, connect the items and use Mirror columns.

Why can’t I directly copy-paste a column’s structure and data from one monday.com board to another, and what are reliable alternatives?

monday.com doesn’t offer copying a column from one board to another. The native routes are board duplication, templates (1 component on Standard, 10 on Pro, 30 on Enterprise), column templates on Enterprise, and automations that map values between matching columns.
