Does monday.com Support Conditional Logic in Automations?

A small wooden rhino pushes a little brass switch with its horn where a wooden marble track splits into two paths.

You need an automation that says:

“If status = Confirmed AND type = Outbound, send Travel Email A. If status = Confirmed AND type = Return, send Travel Email B. Otherwise, do nothing.”

Simple if/then/else logic. Most automation platforms have it.

Except monday.com’s classic automations.

With classic monday.com automations, you’d build:

  • Automation 1: Status = Confirmed, and only if Type = Outbound → send Email A
  • Automation 2: Status = Confirmed, and only if Type = Return → send Email B
  • One more automation for every other combination you need to handle

Classic monday.com automations have no if/else branching and no OR across columns. They do support compound AND conditions, and the workflow builder adds If/Else, multi-branch and Smart conditions from the Standard plan (3 active workflows; Pro 20, Enterprise 250). (monday.com Help Center)

This is one of several gaps covered in our monday.com automations guides.

Here’s what teams need:

If/Then/Else branching:

  • If Type = “VIP Client” → send VIP email
  • Else if Type = “Standard” → send standard email
  • Else → do nothing

Compound conditions:

  • If Status = “Ready” AND Dropdown = “External” → take action
  • If Status = “Approved” AND Budget > $10,000 AND Priority = “High” → escalate

Conditional recipients:

  • If assigned to Alex → CC Alex’s manager
  • If assigned to Maria → CC Maria’s manager

Dynamic email content:

  • If Type = “Outbound” → include outbound instructions
  • If Type = “Return” → include return instructions

What monday.com offers:

Automation structure: Trigger + Condition + Action(s) (one trigger can run multiple actions)

Conditions: You can add conditions via the “+” button, but:

  • All conditions are AND’ed together (no OR logic)
  • Conditions can check different column types together (e.g., status AND dropdown), but only with AND
  • No if/else branching in classic recipes — the workflow builder’s If/Else adds the “otherwise do this” path
  • No conditional email templates — one automation = one email template
  • Limited dynamic recipients — Send an email takes an Email column, typed addresses and People or subscribers, but not different recipients per condition (workflow branches can)

The result: Teams on classic recipes often build many separate automations for scenarios that one workflow with branches could handle.

Thread: How can I make if-this-then-that type automations on Monday? — November 2024

“Monday does not have any automations that use conditional branching” — kindertech, November 27, 2024

Thread: Conditional automations — August – September 2025 (4 replies)

“I am finding the automations very useful but a bit constricting. What I want to be able to do is have an automation that says When item is created and status is A, then create subitem with a status X, IF NOT then create a subitem with a status Y.” — ccoles (Chris Coles), August 22, 2025

“this is a fantastic and super common use case. That challenge of creating a simple ‘IF a condition is met, THEN do this, ELSE do that’ automation is something I’ve run into myself.” — thekizoch (Michael), August 28, 2025

“Right now, native Monday automations don’t support nested conditional logic (there’s no built-in ‘else’ branch).” — the-creative0 (Awe Ebenezer), September 2, 2025

A monday.com Ambassador acknowledged the limitation in classic automations and pointed to the workflow builder. (The workflow builder isn’t Enterprise-only — it starts on the Standard plan — and its If/Else condition has a “not met” path (monday.com Help Center).)

monday.com staff explicitly confirmed the limitation:

“Whilst we support the inclusion of the IF function in our custom automations, I am afraid this particular automation isn’t currently supported natively.” — BiancaT (Monday.com staff), July 2023

“Im surprised a platform like this doesn’t have basic logic for it’s automations.” — ElliottK, September 2023

“How would you go about triggering an automation with an OR vs an AND. In this case I want it to trigger if the Status is PTO OR No Travel.” — seandotson, June 25, 2024

“Rats. Really need some booleans in there to be able to do more complex automations.” — seandotson, June 25, 2024

“Unfortunately the only solution is to duplicate the automation and check for ‘PTO’ in one and for ‘No Travel’ in the other one.” — basdebruin, June 25, 2024

“Sadly no ‘OR’ option but it is desperately needed.” — ProjectMastermind, July 4, 2024

monday.com official response from the Automations team:

Confirmed the Workflow Builder now supports “Is any of” for multiple values in status conditions — “the first step of supporting ‘OR’ condition.” — Maor Nakash (Monday.com Automations team), July 17, 2024

Acknowledged the requirement but noted it competes with other priorities. No timeline provided.

Thread: Multiple triggers for an action using automations — January – June 2020

monday.com staff (lauralev, January 2020) said dynamic recipes were “expected to be released in Q1 of this year.”

Six years on, the workflow builder is where branching and multi-step logic live. Another staff member (melissav) confirmed no ETA and offered to pass feedback (June 2020).

Most Recent (August 2025): IF-Then-Else Still Unsupported in Classic Automations

The same Conditional automations thread (above) ended with a monday.com Ambassador confirming: “Unfortunately, the ability for a pop-up warning does not exist” and that classic automations lack if/else branching.

2026 status: If/Else and multi-branch conditions are documented in the workflow builder, and the New Automation Builder, rolled out from January to March 2026, adds Smart conditions to board automations (monday.com developer community).

The board automations documentation shows (Get started with automations):

  • Structure: Trigger + Condition + Action(s)
  • Can add multiple actions per recipe
  • Can add conditions via “+” button
  • No mention of if/else branching, conditional templates, or OR logic on that page; Comparing the workflow builder and automations documents If/Else in the workflow builder

Scenario: Send email only when several conditions are ALL true.

  • Trigger: Status changes to “Confirmed”
  • Condition 1: and only if Type = “Outbound”
  • Condition 2: and only if Priority = “High”
  • Action: Send VIP travel email

All conditions must be true for the email to send. For the Return branch, build a second automation with Type = “Return”; “otherwise, do nothing” needs no automation at all.

The workflow builder’s If/Else condition has a “not met” path, and multi-branch conditions send each value to its own steps. For several values of one status, “Is any of” covers the OR. Workflows start on the Standard plan (3 active workflows; Pro 20, Enterprise 250).

Native monday.com: Three classic automations (one per template), or one workflow with multi-branch conditions. More on this in picking one email template per column value.

Native monday.com: No CC on the standard Gmail/Outlook action; monday service’s Send new email block has CC/BCC (Pro plan and above). BoardBridge emails, sent from a button, support CC and BCC, a custom sender name and reply-to.

The workflow builder checks several columns before any action runs: an If/Else condition checks the person, item value or status of an item, then runs one set of steps when the condition is met and another when it isn’t, and conditions can sit inside other conditions (monday.com Help Center).

Here’s how the event travel scenario works in one workflow:

  • Trigger type: Status change
  • Trigger column: Status
  • Trigger value: “Advanced”
  1. Add an If/Else condition on the item value Trip Type = “Outbound”.
  2. On the “Yes” path, add the outbound email (Step 3).
  3. On the “No” path, add a second If/Else for Trip Type = “Return”, with the return email on its “Yes” path.
  • Action: Send email
  • Email: the outbound travel email, with the trip details from the item
  • Recipient: Pulled from the “Vendor Email” column

When the status changes to “Advanced”, the workflow checks:

  1. Does Trip Type = “Outbound”? → the outbound email sends.
  2. If not, does Trip Type = “Return”? → the return email sends.

If neither matches, no email sends. For a different template per value, see conditional email template selection.

This is one workflow for both trip types, not seven fragmented rules. Each email a workflow sends uses one automation action (monday.com Help Center).

Classic recipe Workflow builder
Combining conditions Several conditions, combined with AND If/Else, multi-branch and nested conditions
Else branch None A path for when the condition isn’t met
OR “Is any of” checks several values of one status column Multi-branch conditions give each status label its own path
Rules in plain language None Smart condition
Plans Standard and above Standard (3 active workflows), Pro (20), Enterprise (250)
  • AND: Classic recipes combine every condition with AND. Use this when you need “Status = X AND Dropdown = Y”.
  • OR: For OR across columns, build one automation per column, or give each case its own path in a workflow.

To stop an automation when a column is empty, see how to block an automation when a pre-condition isn’t met.

Confirmations Board:

  • Name: “Alex Johnson”
  • Status: “Confirmed”
  • Type: “Outbound” (Dropdown)
  • Priority: “High” (Status)
  • Date: March 15, 2026

When status changes to “Confirmed”:

With one classic automation per branch:

Automation 1: Outbound Travel Email

  • Condition 1: Type = “Outbound” → True
  • Condition 2: Priority = “High” → True
  • → Send “VIP Outbound Travel Email”

Automation 2: Return Travel Email

  • Condition 1: Type = “Return” → False
  • → Does not fire

Automation 3: Standard Confirmation

  • Condition 1: Type = “Standard” → False
  • → Does not fire

Result: Only Automation 1 fires. Alex receives the VIP Outbound Travel Email. A workflow with multi-branch conditions gives the same result in one place.

Without the workflow builder, here are three workarounds monday.com users report:

Create separate status labels for every combination of conditions.

Instead of:

  • Status: “Advanced”
  • Trip Type: “Outbound” or “Return”

Use:

  • Status: “Advanced – Outbound” and “Advanced – Return”

Pros: Works with native automations Cons: Your status column becomes a mess. “Advanced – Outbound”, “Advanced – Return”, “Lodging – Outbound”, “Lodging – Return” — it scales terribly. Status columns should represent project stages, not workflow logic.

Use a formula column to combine multiple checks into one status-like result.

Example:

  • Formula: IF(AND({Status}="Advanced", {Trip Type}="Outbound"), "Trigger Outbound Email", "")
  • Automation: When “Helper Column” changes to “Trigger Outbound Email”, send email

Pros: Keeps your main status column clean Cons: Formula columns can’t trigger automations; monday.com suggests a workflow that copies the result into a regular column first (monday.com Help Center). Even when that works, debugging is painful.

Use an external automation platform that pulls data from monday.com, evaluates conditions, and triggers actions.

Pros: Full conditional logic (AND, OR, nested if/else) Cons:

  • Extra cost: another subscription (Zapier Professional starts at $19.99/month billed annually; cost rises with usage)
  • Complexity: Requires learning a new platform
  • Reliability: Another integration point that can break

From a February 2023 thread titled “Multiple condition in automations”:

“I have managed to make it work but only by using 7 separate automations. Is there a way to consolidate to 1 or max 2?” — vballas (Vagelis Ballas), February 2, 2023

No monday.com staff responded. The thread remains unresolved.

Scenario: Create item on Travel board only for confirmed outbound items.

Native rule:

  • Trigger: Status changes to “Confirmed”
  • Condition: and only if Type = “Outbound”
  • Action: Create an item on the Travel board (a “move item to group” automation there can place it in “Outbound Travel”)

If conditions not met → no item created.

A date rule like “more than 30 days away” needs a workflow with a Smart condition. More in cross-board automation limitations.

Scenario: Block email send if required fields are empty.

Native monday.com: A Button column runs a custom automation, so you can add “and only if” conditions to it like any custom recipe; without them, the button fires regardless of column state.

Not every workflow needs compound conditions. monday.com’s native automations work perfectly fine when:

  • You’re triggering on a single status change with no other dependencies
  • You need simple actions like “notify person” or “move to group”
  • Your workflow is linear (one trigger → one action, no branching)
  • You don’t need CC/BCC on email notifications
  • You’re okay with creating multiple automations for different scenarios

For these cases, stick with native automations — they’re fast to set up and require no additional tools.

OR across columns needs duplicates or a workflow. Classic conditions are AND-only, so “Status = A OR Priority = High” means one automation per branch or a multi-branch workflow.

Nested if/else needs the workflow builder. You cannot build “If A, then (if B, then X, else Y)” in a classic recipe. If you need branching logic built into your boards, our monday.com customization team can set up workflows or custom apps.

Conditions are checked when the automation triggers. You cannot pre-check conditions before triggering (see monday.com’s missing dry-run mode). Conditions are also the main tool for preventing duplicate items in monday.com automations.

10 questions

How to create monday.com automation for ‘if status confirmed AND type outbound send email A, else if return send email B’ without duplicate emails?

Classic monday.com automations combine conditions with AND but have no else branch, so you build one automation per type (status Confirmed AND type Outbound; status Confirmed AND type Return). The workflow builder can do it in one workflow with If/Else or multi-branch conditions.

monday.com automation when status changes to confirmed AND dropdown is outbound then notify, but not for other types?

Native automations AND all conditions, so one recipe can trigger on the status change and check the dropdown: when status changes to Confirmed, and only if the dropdown is Outbound, notify. Other types won’t trigger it.

Workaround for no OR logic in monday.com automation conditions across multiple columns?

monday.com’s classic conditions are AND-only. For OR across columns (e.g., notify if status=A OR priority=High), duplicate the automation for each branch, or use a workflow with multi-branch conditions; for several values of one column, the workflow builder’s “Is any of” covers it.

Why can’t monday.com automations do if item status confirmed and date >30 days then create subitem?

They can, in the workflow builder: an item-value condition checks the status, a Smart condition handles “date more than 30 days away”, then a step creates the subitem. Classic recipes combine conditions with AND but have no else branch.

Prevent multiple emails from overlapping status change automations in monday.com?

Add an “and only if” condition on the type column to each automation, so status=Confirmed fires only the one that matches; conditions on different column types combine with AND. Or use one workflow with If/Else.

Build nested conditional automation in monday.com like if confirmed then if outbound email A else B?

Classic automations have no nested if/else; each recipe is linear, so each branch needs its own rule. The workflow builder (Standard plan and above, not Enterprise-only) has If/Else with a “not met” path and multi-branch conditions.

What about the “Is any of” feature for status automations?

The “Is any of” operator (added in 2024) lets you trigger an automation when a status matches multiple possible values in a single column. For example, “Status is any of: ‘Pending’, ‘In Review’, ‘Approved'”. This is OR logic within one column, not AND logic across multiple columns.

Does the workflow builder support compound conditions?

Yes. The workflow builder (formerly Workflow Center) has If/Else and multi-branch conditions with an else path, and it is available on Standard (3 active workflows), Pro (20) and Enterprise (250). Each condition step counts toward your monthly automation actions.

Can I use compound conditions with button automations?

In the workflow builder, an If/Else condition can check Trip Type before any email step runs. BoardBridge emails are sent from a button, with item column values merged in, CC/BCC, a custom sender name and reply-to; ask us whether a button can check Trip Type before it sends.

Can I block an automation from running if required data is missing?

Yes. In the workflow builder, an If/Else or Smart condition can check that the column is filled in before the email step, with a notify step on the “No” path. Required columns and Data validations (Pro and Enterprise) can also block items from being created or updated without the data.
