Why Teams Move from Basecamp to monday.com

Basecamp keeps projects calm and simple. Teams usually look at monday.com when they need more structure: custom fields, timelines, workload views, dashboards across projects and automations.

Our Basecamp vs monday.com comparison goes through the differences.

What Moves, What We Rebuild, What Cannot Move

Data moves through Basecamp's exports and API; customizations such as automations, views and forms are rebuilt in monday.com.

We move a sample with its comments and files, and you check it in monday.com.

  4. 04

    Full migration and rebuild

Duration: Dates fixed in your quote

We move everything in scope, link the items, and rebuild your automations, views and forms in monday.com.

  5. 05

    Checks and handover

Duration: Before you switch off Basecamp

We compare item counts board by board, walk your team through the new boards, and hand the export files over to you.

When Basecamp Is Still the Right Call

Moving is not always the answer. Stay on Basecamp, or plan the move carefully, if:

  • Your team likes Basecamp because there is little to set up and nothing to configure. monday.com gives you more control, which also means more to decide.
  • You have a few small projects with no comments or files you need to keep. monday.com's Basecamp import or a spreadsheet import is enough.

Doing it yourself, compared

The options monday.com gives you, set against a full migration. Each fact comes from the sources below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move Basecamp to monday.com myself?

You can, if you are on Basecamp 4. monday.com's built-in Basecamp import brings in the to-dos of the projects you pick and adds a sync for new to-dos. Messages, files and comments are not part of it.

Do comments and attachments move?

Basecamp's account export holds every project's messages, lists and files. We copy comments into the item's updates and files into a Files column or a workdoc.

What happens to our automations, views and forms?

No export carries them. We list each one in the assessment and rebuild the ones you still need as monday.com automations, views, forms and dashboards.

What cannot be moved?

Campfire chats and pings: Pings are private, with their own export that Basecamp advises only for legal or HR reasons, and its export help doesn't mention Campfire chats. We check them in your free assessment. Change history (who changed what, and when): An import can't write monday.com's activity log; it starts on the day of the move. Everything else in the table above either moves or is rebuilt in monday.com.

How long does it take?

It depends on how many projects and items you have, how many files, and how much needs rebuilding. The dates are fixed in your quote after the free assessment.

How much does it cost?

It depends on your projects, item counts, files and automations. The assessment is free and ends with a fixed quote.
